A Bedtime Story

My grandmother Gussie saw it for the first time in a store window on Grand Street, on the Lower East Side in New York City. From the outside looking in, the English marquetry that defined the bedroom set was the epitome of beauty – one she hoped to be able to afford when she married Isaac, her longtime love.

There was no getting around it: it was time for me to go. We had shared 18 years under one roof, and now, there we were, just the two of us, standing under a shady tree, 1,500 miles from home. He was definitely not only not coming with me, but undoubtedly hoping I didn’t get too emotional in public.

There are marathon bedtime story rituals, endless questions about how things work, and monsters under the bed. Lego pieces grow smaller and castles more intricate. He tries the guitar, plays the trombone, saves ­quarters to buy video games, and collects trading cards, which he keeps in a shoe box under his bed.

When you’re actively in cancer treatment, whether it’s surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or taking anti-estrogens, there’s a sense you’re doing something to prevent a recurrence. But what happens when the only thing left to do is go out and live your life?
